Sub-Zero Refrigerator Repair in Chappaqua & New Castle

Built-in, column, French door and undercounter refrigerators

When the refrigerator side of a Sub-Zero warms up while the freezer holds, the fault is usually a fan, the defrost system, a sensor or a control — and each has a different price. We test which before replacing anything, in Chappaqua, Millwood and across New Castle.

The short answer

Sub-Zero refrigerator repair near Chappaqua typically runs $300–$750 for common faults: an evaporator or condenser fan $300–$550, a defrost heater $320–$550, a sensor $280–$450. Sealed-system work is $800–$2,200. The $95 diagnostic is credited — call (914) 340-0898.

The most common call

Freezer cold, refrigerator warm: what it means

Sub-Zero's Classic Series uses what it calls Dual Refrigeration: separate refrigerator and freezer systems, which keep fresh-food odors out of frozen food and ice. The side effect for repair is useful — when only the fresh-food side is warm, the fault is in that side's own parts, and the freezer tells us the compressor feeding it is fine.

Here is how the usual suspects line up, with typical prices near Chappaqua:

PartWhat you noticeTypical cost
Evaporator fanCompressor runs, little air inside, sometimes a rattle or silence$300–$550
Condenser fan / dirty condenserWarm grille area, long run times, a Vacuum Condenser message on newer units$300–$550
Defrost heater or thermostatFrost on the back panel, temperature creeping up over days$320–$550
Temperature sensor (thermistor)Readings that make no sense; EE on the right of the display means the refrigerator's$280–$450
Control boardDisplay or fans behaving erratically$400–$850
Sealed systemWarm despite good airflow and a clean condenser$800–$2,200

Owner checks

What you can safely check before we come

  • The condenser. On Classic (CL) units it is behind the flip-up grille; on Designer (DET, DEC) behind the kickplate held by two screws. Turn the unit off at the control panel, wear gloves and vacuum it with a soft brush. Sub-Zero says a unit under 6 months old does not need it.
  • The temperature. Sub-Zero notes that a refrigerator above 48° while set at 38 is unlikely to recover from a condenser cleaning — call for service instead.
  • EC50 with Service flashing means excessive refrigerator compressor run. If temperatures are near normal, clean the condenser and hold the door-alarm (bell) key 15 seconds to clear it; if they are high, call.
  • The lights. On Classic (CL) and Designer (DET, DEC) units, a door left ajar switches the interior lights off to cut heat. Close everything for an hour before deciding the unit has failed.

Every refrigerator type

Column, built-in, French door, undercounter

The old appliance pages on this site now live here. The type changes where the parts are and how long the job takes:

  • Columns are single-purpose, full-height units set side by side; on Designer models the condenser and its airflow are at the kickplate, which Sub-Zero says must never be covered or enclosed.
  • Built-in over-and-under and side-by-side units have their serial tag inside the refrigerator door near the top hinge (inside the freezer door on side-by-sides).
  • French door models add a second door seal and an alignment check on every visit; the tag is inside the left-hand door.
  • Undercounter refrigerators and drawers sit close to floor dust, so the toe-kick grille is the first stop.

Common Problems We Fix

  • Not cooling properly
  • Excessive frost buildup
  • Water leaking
  • Strange noises
  • Ice maker not working
  • Temperature fluctuations
  • Compressor running constantly
  • Door not sealing properly

Answers

Frequently asked questions

My Sub-Zero freezer is cold but the refrigerator is warm. Is the compressor bad?

Usually not. On Classic units each side has its own system, so a cold freezer says nothing bad about the refrigerator's — the evaporator fan ($300–$550) or the defrost system ($320–$550) is far more common.

Is there a Sub-Zero repair service near me in Chappaqua?

Yes — we cover Chappaqua, Millwood and the rest of New Castle, plus Pleasantville, Thornwood and Briarcliff Manor. Most calls get a same-day or next-morning window: (914) 340-0898.

How much does a Sub-Zero refrigerator repair cost?

Common faults run $300–$750; sealed-system work $800–$2,200. The $95 diagnostic is credited, and the firm price is given before any work.

Is my Sub-Zero still under warranty?

Sub-Zero covers all parts and labor for two years from installation and the sealed system fully for five years, with sealed-system parts to year twelve. Check the installation date before paying for sealed-system work.

    The repair, and the paperwork

Most common parts are carried on the van. You get a written note of what was replaced, and the repair is covered by our 1-Year Parts & Labor Warranty.

“Liebherr door quit pulling itself shut, so the alarm chirped through dinner most nights. Hinge cam worn flat. Both hinges swapped, cabinet levelled, door closes by itself now.”
— Marisol C.
“The fresh food side of our Sub-Zero crept up near fifty while the freezer stayed fine. The condenser fan had seized and the grille behind it was packed with dust from our renovation. New fan motor, coils vacuumed, temperature steady since.”
— Ray H., Chappaqua, NY · May 2026
“Water pooled under the crisper drawers of our Viking every few days. He found the drain tube iced shut, thawed and cleared it, then rerouted the line so it empties properly. Under an hour, and he wiped the floor down before leaving.”
— Marco V., Mount Kisco, NY · June 2026
“A faint rattle in our Thermador column grew into a loud whir over a fortnight. The evaporator fan blade was cracked and clipping the shroud. Diagnosis took ten minutes and he explained what he was listening for; the part then sat on order nine days, a long stretch with a half-cold refrigerator.”
— Ellis T., Armonk, NY · April 2025
